What’s in The WORD (God’s Word)?

We’ve all heard it before… “Read the Bible.” “Study scripture.” “Spend time with God, in God’s Word.” But why?

What is contained in God’s Word that is so important? So useful that these expressions are and have been repeated over and over for centuries? Given as advice, as an exhortation by so many?

The plea even echoed throughout the Word of God itself:

“This book of instruction must not depart from your mouth; you are to recite it day and night so that you may carefully observe everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in whatever you do.” Joshua 1:8 (HSBC)

“Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:4 (NIV84)

God’s Word Is…

What in God’s Word is so vital? Well, it is a God-breathed instruction manual, a code of conduct, a storehouse of knowledge (2 Timothy 3:16-17). The Word is a how-to guide. It will tell us how to:

  • respond to the world
  • survive in the world
  • be successful in the world
A Direct Connection

Scripture is a direct connection to the heart of God. His voice speaking to us personally through His Word. It gives us tangible wisdom and timeless proof of God, His promises, and His will.

God’s Word confirms the voice of God and the promptings of the Holy Spirit. If we feel led to do

or say something but wonder if it’s from the Holy Spirit, questioning whether we are hearing from God, look to His Word.

Does what we are hearing line up with scripture? Chances are we are on the right track. God will not change His mind (Numbers 23:19). He is the same yesterday today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). {Hint – acts of generosity and kindness are secure bet. If loving others and/or self-sacrifice is involved – Ding! Ding! We have a winner!!}

Absolute Truth

The Word of God is absolute Truth. The Bible is true in its entirety, every part, every word. It is palpable, black and white truth. No grey, no relative or marginal truth. There is no picking and choosing which parts apply and which ones do not. You either believe it – every word of it. Thus, it is Truth, or it is not.

Absolute Truth is not always comfortable, and it certainly is not popular in our current culture. But within the uncomfortable lies reassurance. God’s Word and His promises are always true. Every single word. Every single promise. God’s Word – a guide, a lifeline directly from God to us – forever absolute Truth.

God’s Word Helps

The Word of God also helps us. It instructs us on how to live a life that pleases God (1 Thessalonians 4:1-9). How to handle conflict (Ephesians 4:31-32, James 1:19-21). How to deal with

that annoying neighbor (Galatians 5:14, Ephesians 4:1-3). When to speak and what to say (Proverbs 18:21, Proverbs 15:4). eating, Sleeping (Psalm 4:8, Psalm 127:2), eating and exercise (1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Romans 12:1-2). Marriage (Ephesians 5:21-33, Proverbs 18:22) and family (Proverbs 20:6-7, 1 Timothy 3:5). Even time management (Ephesians 5:15-17, Psalm 39:4-5). It’s all right there on the pages of His Word.

As believers, with the power of the Holy Spirit inside us and God’s Word in our hands, we have the tools and the information for every circumstance and situation, every problem or dilemma. God has provided everything we need to navigate through the highs, lows, twists, and turns of this life within the pages of His Word.
